Tell me about how sedation dentistry works...
Depending on what form of
sedation is necessary, the procedure will differ slightly.
In our practice, the goal
is to eventually not have you require any sedation at all for your
treatment; and believe it or not, although this may not sound totally real
to you at this point and although the thought of that happening may be
frightening, that is normally what ends up happening. Granted, subsequent
visits will not require as much treatment as was required initially. We
will never do anything on you if you are in any sort of discomfort or fear.
That is a surefire way of knowing whether or not the procedure will be
successful or actually work.
If you are having IV
(intravenous) sedation, you will have your treatment performed in a quiet
room, with noise-blocking headphones. We will cover you with a thick, warm
blanket and start the sedation procedure. Then, while you are sedated we
will perform your treatment comfortably much like if you were having any
other medical procedure under sedation. We will monitor your vital signs
continually and will proceed to complete as much dental treatment as
possible. Once the procedure is over and you are awake, alert and aware,
your companion will take you home where you will eat something mild and rest
quietly and comfortably for several hours.
If you are having
sedation, but the route of administration is via a tablet instead of IV,
your companion will accompany you to the office and you will be given a
tablet one hour prior to the procedure. You will be escorted to the room
where we will cover you with a thick, warm blanket and quiet, noise-blocking
headphones will be placed. We will monitor your vital signs and once you
are comfortable and sedated we will perform as much dental treatment as
possible.
Once the procedure is over and you are awake, alert and aware, your
companion will take you home where you will eat something mild and rest
quietly and comfortably for several hours as per our instructions.
